Your
participation is urgently needed in
the Ottawa-Gatineau Climate Assembly.
Dear Friends,
The climate crisis is in full swing. Yet, George Bush and Stephen
Harper's idea
of "action" on climate change is to dramatically increase greenhouse
gas pollution. In fact, Bush and Harper are doing everything they can
to derail
the Kyoto Protocol and sabotage any progress towards real cuts in
emissions.
They did it this summer at the G8 Summit in Germany. They did it again
at the
recent APEC Summit, hosted by their staunch climate-killing ally,
Australian
Prime Minister John Howard. They hope to do it again this December at
the
upcoming UN climate conference in Bali, Indonesia. In fact, Harper,
Bush, and
several other countries are meeting this week to plan how they can
derail the
talks in Bali. We can't let them get away with it.
People will take to the streets to demand action on climate change in
at least
60 countries on December 8. Join in building the movement locally here
in the
Ottawa-Gatineau region, with the formation of an umbrella coalition to
coordinate mass demonstrations to stop climate chaos. This planning
meeting
will be an important step towards building the biggest climate change
demonstration Ottawa has ever seen, and to learn more about grassroots
climate
efforts in Canada and around the world. We will soon be issuing a call
to
action based on the draft below for circulation across the country. If
you are
part of an organization that hasn't signed on yet, please consider
doing so. We
need to save the climate if we're going to save the world.

SAVE
THE CLIMATE
SAVE THE WORLD
Global
Day of Action
December 8, 2007
George W. Bush, Stephen Harper, and their allies continue to stall and
stonewall, as the world burns. Time is running out to avert a climate
catastrophe, and we can't leave action on climate change in their hands
any
longer. And so, people around the world are preparing for the largest
planetary
day of action yet to stop climate chaos. It's up to us now.
On December 8, people in over 60 countries around the globe will take
to the
streets to confront the greatest threat humanity has ever faced. The
worldwide
mobilization will coincide with the UN Climate Talks in Bali,
Indonesia, which
run from December 3rd to 14th 2007. These talks are known as the MOP 3,
COP 13:
the third Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol and the
thirteenth
Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework on Climate Change.
Negotiations
on deeper emissions cuts after 2012, when the first phase of the Kyoto
Protocol
will come to an end, are expected to dominate the conference. These
talks will
mark a crucial turning point for the planet.
To ensure that world leaders take the urgent and resolute action that
is needed
to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate, there is
an
overwhelming need to create a groundswell of global opinion to push for
the
urgent and radical action on climate change. We are calling on
individuals and
organizations to rise to the challenge. We need to take to the streets
across
Canada in greater numbers than ever, to send a strong message to the
federal
government: Stop Climate Chaos!
December 8 could be the demonstration the world has been waiting for.
Will you
