On June 21, 2006, after spending three and a half years being held in detention without charges under the Security Certificate process, Mohamed Harkat was released from prison under the most severe bail conditions imposed in Canadian history. The Justice for Mohamed Harkat Committee, while welcoming Mr. Harkat’s release, is deeply concerned by the enormous toll that the bail conditions have imposed upon on Mr. Harkat and his family. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, Mr. Harkat must be in the presence of his wife, mother-in-law or her partner. In addition Mr. Harkat is only allowed to leave his home three times a week for short outings which much must be approved in advance by the Canadian Borders Services Agency (CBSA).

Mr. Harkat has not been charged with any crime, and to this day neither Mr. Harkat nor his lawyers have been allowed by the Canadian government to see the supposed evidence that the Canadian authorities claim is the basis for their decision to attempt to deport him from Canada to Algeria. If sent to Algeria Mr. Harkat faces torture and the strong possibility of execution by Algerian authorities.

Among other demands the Justice for Mohamed Harkat Committee calls for:
The immediate and unconditional release of the detainees currently in
jail and under house arrest or their fair trial under the pre-Anti-
Terrorism Act criminal code if any evidence actually exists against
        them
An end to all deportation proceedings against all currently held under
       Security Certificates
