GET INVOLVED
Please come out and join in. Bring your friends. We can make this the biggest action yet! More politicians and main stream groups are asking to bring the troops home. Our street polls show public opinion is clearly on our side. This day of action has been endorsed by many large NGOs, unions and faith groups.
WHY WE ARE MARCHING
We must speak out because Canada's involvement in Afghanistan is having disastrous consequences. The reasons given for being in Afghanistan are not valid. The aggressive, U.S.-style search and destroy missions and lack of aid have lost the hearts and minds of the people of Afghanistan, putting Canadian troops at great risk. Corruption flourishes, drug production soars, terrorism grows, women are less safe, and more civilians lose their lives. We must bring the troops home and find a different way to help the people of Afghanistan.
WHAT'S HAPPENING
At 1 pm, we will gather at the Peacekeeping Monument at Sussex and St. Patrick for some short speeches.
Speakers at the Peacekeeping Memorial include:
Paul Dewar, NDP MP for Ottawa Centre
Shelina Merani, Muslim Presence Ottawa
Bill Clennett, Rassemblement Outaouais Contre la Guerre
Deborah Bourque, Canadian Union of Postal Workers
The main gathering at the Peacekeeping Monument will be joined by two feeder marches.
- The Student Coalition Against War (SCAW) will meet at 11:00 am for a STUDENT RALLY at the human rights monument( Elgin and Lisgar). The student rally will be a funeral for Canada and Afghanistan to commemorate the deaths of Afghani civilians and Canadian troops.
- Rassemblement Outaouais Contre la Guerre(ROCG) will meet at 12:00 pm at Parc Jacques Cartier, Gatineau, to march to join the main gathering.
We will then march past the American Embassy and through the market area, ending at Parliament Hill. Bring your costumes, noise-makers, chants, banners and signs.
